Die Band Spirit entstand aus der Vorgängerband Red Rooster, die 1965 von dem Jazz-Schlagzeuger Ed Cassidy gegründet wurde.  Die Musik ist nur schwer einzuordnen, neben Jazz, Westcoast und Psychedelic findet man vor allem Einflüsse der Musik von Jimi Hendrix. Der Sound wird vom sehr speziellen Gitarrenspiel von Randy California getragen. In Deutschland hatte Spirit beim Rockpalast 1978 ihren Durchbruch. 2 Stunden Musik aus über 30 Jahren Spirit und Randy California. Durch die Sendung führt Euch Michael Marsch.
